30 Jan Self Portrait Photography
Some people like to photograph themselves, to take a portrait at home. When creating a self-portrait, it is not possible to follow what is happening in the frame. To create a good photo, you have to resort to some tricks.
Almost all modern cameras have built-in timers. Using the timer can give one to thirty seconds to take up space in the frame. This option is not the best, but in many situations it is easiest to use it.
Remote control (with and without wire)
With a remote control shutter you can take a picture at any time. It is very comfortable. moreover, multiple pictures can be taken. The remotes are compatible with most modern cameras. Their cost is from $ 30 to $ 50. For those who understand electronics, there are instructions for making such a remote control yourself.
A friend can be very helpful when taking a self-portrait. He can follow the construction of the composition and focus. One of the hardest parts of taking a self-portrait is focusing. Most likely, you will have to take several shots until you get a good shot.
Photographers not only capture beautiful moments, but also tell the truth with their pictures. You can take a self-portrait, conveying only your positive side, but in this case, your sensual side should be show.
It’s quite difficult to line up lights if you’re not in a studio. When photographing in natural light, it is better to switch the camera to manual mode and adjust all the parameters yourself, rather than relying on sensors.
To build lighting, you can use table legs, floor lamps, flashlights or a camera flash. Anything will do to build light. The main thing is to create the right atmosphere. Don’t be afraid to spend several hours creating a self-portrait.
Apply creative ideas
As with all snapshots, photographing yourself requires a bit of creativity. Try to make the picture stand out. Find interesting backgrounds, original ways of shooting, or unusual costumes.
Taking pictures of yourself can be great fun and discover a lot of new things for yourself. Taking a self-portrait, you are not limited in time. You can take as long as you like to this. The only barrier to getting the perfect portrait is your imagination.
Feel like an artist!
A photographer is always a screenwriter, a director, and an artist. Only in practice, all three hypostases rarely actively manifest together. Some photographers are more screenwriters. They carefully prepare for filming, make pencil sketches, select props. Others are directors. On the set, Fellini, Antonioni and Visconti become real. Photo models are turned into obedient material: “Sit down, stand up, cry!” The third category of photographers is artists: Dustin Hoffman, Innokenty Smoktunovskiy, Montgomery Clift, Vera Kholodny and Ava Gardner. They, of course, write scripts and direct scenes, but the goal is the same – to show themselves, their complex inner world, to reveal the created image. This is how self-portraits are created.
In the role of a photo model
If, in the case of an ordinary portrait, the photographer calls the model for dialogue, then when working on a self-portrait, the viewer sees the author’s communication with himself, his inner dialogue, the process of self-knowledge. Immersion begins with the contemplation of the external form and continues in the context of the culture, the era where the photographer placed himself. It can be assumed that self-portrait compensates for the lack of opportunities for self-expression offered by other genres, such as portraiture. However, in fact, another option is possible here, when the photographer cannot or, perhaps, does not want to achieve the desired result in ordinary genres, and then a self-portrait becomes the only way for creative self-realization.
The famous (auto) portrait of Sergei Gavrilov, made during experiments with a ring flash. The picture itself was taken by his assistant, but the photographer has a creative idea, so he should be recognized as the only author of the work.
Self portrait and selfie
While working on this material, I asked the photographers of Sony Alpha, is there a difference between a self-portrait and a selfie, the so-called. “Yourself”, because it is, in fact, also a self-portrait. I photographed myself. However, everyone agreed that a selfie is something frivolous, momentary, documentary, which replaced snapshots (instant shots), which were popular during film and digital compacts. Sergey Gavrilovexplains that a snapshot is a kind of photograph that is taken as a keepsake: “I was here.” As before, the theme basically remains the same: “Me and the Eiffel Tower”, “Me and the neighbor’s dog”, “Me and fellow student Masha”. By the way, we note that when one person photographs himself, this is a selfie, and when there are a lot of people and the photographer is among them, then this genre is called Welfie (from the English Welfie). At the same time, we will not touch the various directions of selfies, such as: lift bow, toilet bow, shufis, sagli and others.
In principle, a selfie is also a self-portrait, only a primitive version of it. The persistent author of the selfie is also looking for himself, trying to demonstrate to others “his rich inner world”, only in this search he (the author of the selfie) rather does not approach the goal, but moves away from it, blurring his essence in the surrounding attributes.
According to Alexei Aryutov, it is initially assumed that a self-portrait is a work of art. To create a self-portrait, like a regular portrait , the photographer spends energy, time and health. In a word, he creates. “Selfie is fast. Once – and you’re done. Something hit in the head, pulled it out, pouted out his lips, clicked, ran on. “
Tatyana Malysheva believes that the difference between a self-portrait and a selfie genre lies in awareness, in the idea, in working with light, in the reflection of the inner world in visual embodiment. For me, there is not and cannot be any equal sign between a selfie and a self-portrait. “
